Since Monday’s snowstorm I’ve been watching the piles of plowed snow turn darker, grayer, and dirtier. Not very appetizing. But, freshly fallen snow around bushes and cars looks like pure white whipped merengue.
Snow cream is an ice cream dessert made with real snow. It’s been around for hundreds of years and popular in Northern Europe. The main ingredients are sugar, cream, vanilla, and snow - although you can add other flavoring and food color.
I found a recipe for Orange Creamsicle Snow Cream over at The Family Kitchen using real snow.

Orange Creamscicle Snow Cream
- 6-8 cups of snow
- 8 ounces whipping cream
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1 teaspoon orange extract
- 1/4 teaspoon orange gel coloring
Scoop clean, fresh-fallen snow into a large bowl (don’t panic about making the measurements exact and don’t pack the snow. You want it to be light and fluffy.) Stir together the whipping cream, sugar, orange extract, and orange food coloring until the sugar is dissolved. Pour the cream mixture over the snow. Using a spoon, stir the mixture together until it’s creamy. Add snow by the scoopfuls, if needed, until the mixture resembles ice cream. Scoop into bowls & serve immediately.
Turn Your Snow Cream into a Sundae: For our Orange Creamscicle Snow Cream Sundaes (pictures above), we spread a dollop of whipped cream on top of the snow cream, added sprinkles, and topped it all off with an orange gumdrop. So easy and so cute!
What a cute idea! My mom used to make ‘snow muffins’ when I was a kid.
